Emma is a well-known mattress brand and it’s definitely one of my favourite ones. They entered the British market many years ago and since then, they have seen great success. In this Emma Original Hybrid mattress review, I will talk about this true best-seller that has won many awards.
Awarded “Best Overall Mattress” for 2024
Emma is a German brand but they built their mattresses here in the UK. They have an extensive mattress range that also includes the Emma Elite mattress. The Original Hybrid mattress is an affordable option that is built to suit the average sleeper. Mine was delivered almost ten days ago so it’s time now to move to the full review below.

What is an Emma Original Hybrid mattress made of?
The Original Hybrid features a total of 3 layers plus the cover.
- Top Layer: An Airgocell foam layer that allows airflow and keeps the sleeping surface cool during the night. This is the best material I have seen in a mattress and it’s great to see it’s used here.
- Middle Layer: A firm foam layer that ensures that pressure relief and spine support are distributed properly.
- Bottom Layer: A layer made of pocket springs that provides your lower back and shoulders with the needed support. It also works as the base of this mattress.
This mattress measures 25cm in height and in the picture below you can better understand how the different layers are positioned.
What is the cover made of?
The cover of the Emma Original Hybrid is one of the best I have seen. They use climate fibres and pores to make it breathable and I must admit, it works very well. The recent heatwave in London allowed me to put this to the test and it performed great. The cover is made of 99% polyester and 1% elastane. The latter makes it quite elastic and helps it to stay in place. The sleeping surface feels soft but at the same time, it seems very durable.
The design of this cover features a white top part with a grey side and bottom part. Anti-slip elements are applied to the bottom part that help the mattress stay in place. Moreover, they have added carrying handles on the sides which are helpful if you want to move this mattress. The cover is removable and you can machine wash it at 40 degrees. This is great as I like to keep my mattress clean and fresh. Overall, I think that Emma did a fantastic job here and it’s definitely one of the best covers I have seen.
How firm is the Emma Original mattress?
I want to continue writing this Emma Original Hybrid mattress review and discuss its feel. This comes with a medium-firm feel and it’s designed to suit the average sleeper. If I use my virtual scale, it would be a 6.7 with 10 being really firm. I want to talk now about my experience with it during the past ten days.
Starting from the back position, the mattress felt really comfortable and I immediately felt the Airgocell foam ‘hugging’ my body. Pressure relief was adequate and there was no pain on my back. My hips and shoulders were well-supported and I felt that my spine was aligned correctly.
Turning to the side position, the mattress adapted again very quickly. The combination of Airgocell foam and memory foam worked really well. Sinkage increased and that allowed my shoulders and hips to get to the right position. The medium-firm feel adds comfort but the impressive thing is that the mattress manages to provide the body with the needed support and pressure relief.
Finally, moving to the stomach position, my hips and shoulders were well-supported and in the right position. The firmness worked well for me and this mattress is a true all-rounder. That means that you will be able to sleep in every position regardless of your body type. This is impressive, especially for a mattress of this price. Overall, I think that Emma did a fantastic job here and the Original Hybrid won’t disappoint you.
The edge support of this mattress is not bad but this is expected from a mattress that features high-quality pocket springs. That means that you will get good performance across the four corners of the sleeping surface. If you share your bed with a partner then this is a great option. Motion transfer is minimal so you won’t annoy each other.
What type of bed to use with this mattress?
You can put the Emma Original Hybrid mattress on any flat surface. That means that you can use a slatted frame, a box frame or even your floor. Any choice will work equally well. Of course, make sure the surface you use is clean and dry. The mattress comes in many sizes, including some EU ones so you will definitely find the one that will fit your old base. I used my IKEA bed frame and it worked well.
How will it be delivered?
As I have already mentioned, the Emma Original Hybrid is a rolled mattress. It will be delivered directly to your door inside a carton box. They offer free delivery that usually takes between 2-5 working days. This is great so you won’t have to wait for a long time before you receive your mattress.
Delivery took only 2 working days for me and my mattress was shipped with UPS. The couriers were really helpful and polite. The box is not too heavy so you might be able to transfer it by yourself. However, I suggest you have a second person there to help you out, especially if you order one of the bigger sizes. Overall, they did a great job so I was happy with their service.
Does the Emma Original Hybrid come with a trial period?
The Emma Original comes with a 200-night trial period that allows you to try the mattress before you decide whether you want to keep it or not. If you are not happy with it, you can return it and get a full refund. In this case, all you have to do is just talk to their customer service department and they will arrange everything for you.
The mattress also comes with a 10-year guarantee which means that you are covered for a long time. This is great to see and takes away all the stress of buying a mattress online. All the returned mattresses are donated to charity organisations. Emma works closely with two, in particular, Debra and the British Heart Foundation. Overall, their service is great and it’s great they give back to the community.
How much does it cost?
