Simba is a maker that every year presents something new and a few weeks ago, they introduced the ‘Earth’ range. In this Simba Apex mattress review, I discuss their most premium option which also includes the Simba Source mattress and the Simba Escape mattress.
What is special about the ‘Earth’ range is that all mattresses are made with natural materials and they are handcrafted in Yorkshire. My Apex mattress arrived almost a week ago so it’s time now to move to the full review below.
What is this mattress made of?
The Simba Apex mattress has a complicated design that features 7 layers. In detail, these are:
- A British wool layer that helps with comfort and support.
- A layer made of Yorkshire hemp and flax that controls moisture but also adds support.
- A soft cashmere layer that adds comfort.
- A soft mohair layer that adds extra cushioning.
- A layer of Aerocoil micro-springs that responds to body weight and movement.
- A layer of carbon steel spring layers that adds stability and support.
- A Quadcore sprung base which is the main source of support.
The mattress measures 30cm in height so it has a high profile. The image below gives us a glimpse of what this mattress looks like from the inside.
Does it come with a high-quality cover?
The cover of this mattress is made of viscose wool. If you are not familiar with this material, it’s made of wood pulp and it’s most commonly used as a silk alternative. The reason for that is its affordable price and its silky smooth touch. As a result, it’s a commonly used material for mattress covers. Viscose wool is quite breathable and this will allow this mattress to breathe well. Moreover, the design is a clean one as this cover features a white colour. On the sides, you will find 4 handles that will help you move this mattress whenever this is needed. The bad news is that the cover is not removable so you cannot clean it using your washing machine. This is the only weakness here but it’s not an important one. Overall, this is a high-quality cover that won’t disappoint.
How firm is this mattress?
It’s time to continue with this Simba Apex mattress review and discuss its feel. This is a mattress built to suit most sleepers so it comes with a medium-firm feel. If I use my virtual scale here, I would say that this is a 6.5 with 10 being really firm. Let’s see now how this mattress performed during the past week.
Starting from the back position, the mattress did a fantastic job distributing my weight and I felt well-supported. Pressure relief was great and I felt very comfortable sleeping this way.
Turning to the side position, the three spring layers collaborated efficiently and the Apex mattress adjusted quickly. Sinkage increased which helped my spine to align correctly and there was no discomfort in the hip area.
Finally, turning to the stomach position, the mattress managed to support my hips and shoulders and I felt comfortable sleeping this way. Althought this is not a firm mattress it did a great job in this position and I can say that this is a true all-rounder.
For those who sleep with a partner, I have good news for you. The edge support is excellent and that means you can use the whole sleeping surface. Moreover, the motion transfer is minimal so you won’t disturb each other during night time.
Will I get free delivery?
If you decide to buy this premium mattress you should expect a premium service too and Simba won’t disappoint you on that. In fact, they offer a free VIP service that usually costs £50. That includes a 2-man delivery, mattress setup and packaging removal. Additionally, you can choose the delivery date for free, something really useful for busy professionals. Finally, for an extra £50, you can have your old mattress removed so you don’t need to worry about it. My experience with them was excellent and they delivered what they promised. As a result, I was really happy with their service.
Does it come with a guarantee?
All mattresses in this range come with a 10-year guarantee that will cover you for a long time. This will cover any issues that could reasonably be said to have started with Simba. Of course, before you buy a mattress, you should always read the full policy so you know what you will get.
Besides that, the Simba Apex mattress comes with a 200-night trial period so you have plenty of time to try this at home. This is very important as this is quite an expensive mattress. If you are not happy with your purchase, you have the right to return it and get your money back. All returned mattresses are recycled, refurbished or donated. I also have to mention here that you don’t need to keep the original packaging to be able to complete a return. Overall, this is a fantastic service offered here and it’s what I expected from such a brand.
How expensive is this mattress?
As you expect this is not the cheapest option out there so if you want to buy one, you should be prepared to spend a lot.
